Senior hunger is on the rise during the country’s economic downturn as the costs for basic necessities such as food continue to rise.
One in nine seniors in America face the threat of hunger. These seniors are our mothers, grandmothers, and aunts.
The Meals On Wheels Association of America wants the public to remember senior moms who’ll be alone and facing the threat of hunger on Mother’s Day this Sunday.
The association has launched a campaign called Meals for Moms to bring attention to this national problem. You can donate $7 to deliver a nourishing meal to a homebound Mom. It’s a great way to honor or remember your mom on Mother’s Day.
You also can send a free e-card to a special mom for Mother’s Day, or to a homebound senior. By sending e-cards, you’re helping to raise awareness of the elderly moms who don’t have the food they need to survive. The association’s goal is to send 10,000 e-cards for Mother’s Day.
Six millions seniors in American face the threat of hunger. Go here to see association-sponsored research about senior hunger in your state. To locate a Meals On Wheels program near you, click here.
