Health and the holidays are grabbing the attention of baby boomer bloggers
December 03, 2013
Thanksgiving has come and gone and Hanukkah is coming to a close. As Christmas, Kwanzaa, New Years, and Three Kings Day approach, baby boomer bloggers are writing about, what else, the holidays, plus health, positive aging, and days gone by.
Here’s what bloggers writing for the Best of Boomer Blogs have to say for their 336th offering:
Modern Senior
For most of us, the first big round of holiday chaos is now safely behind us. Now it’s time to seriously start thinking about shopping for holiday gifts. To help you out, Amy Blitchok at Modern Senior, has put together a list of great gift ideas for the baby boomers in your life.
The Generation Above Me
Alzheimer's Disease threatens to rob people of their identity and their relationships. Karen D. Austin at The Generation Above Me recently met Deborah Shouse who is a writer, advocate, and performance artist. In the article, “The Ultimate Performance Art: Love,” Karen describes how Shouse uses wisdom, humor, and a shift in perspective to preserve a loving relationship with her mother.
The Survive and Thrive Boomer Guide
On my blog, I write about how cancer rates are predicted to jump 67 percent when all boomers get to be 65 and older. That’s because the majority of all cancer diagnoses are made in those in that age group, and boomers are such a large demographic.
In 2010, those 65 and older made up 13 percent of the U.S. population. In 2030, the 65 and older age group will be nearly 20 percent of the population.
This statistic is being discussed as a new report points to this increase in cancer rates among boomers as one of the reasons the cancer care system in the United States is in crisis. The report was done by the Institute of Medicine.
Other factors contributing to the crisis, according to the report, are rapidly rising costs, a shrinking pool of cancer care professionals, and dramatic changes in cancer therapies over the last decade that sometimes make it difficult to determine which patients should receive what treatment.
Fifty 2 Ninety
Martin Rice of Fifty 2 Ninety, a new blogger for the Best of Boomer Blogs, writes about a project going on in British Columbia where a group of young people is making videos with the aim of demonstrating how interesting and active older adults are. It’s part of a larger effort to fight ageism.
Sightings Over Sixty
Tom Sightings of Sightings Over Sixty reflects on a major star who died 25 years ago. See if you can guess who he is at “Remember Him?”
That’s our boomer blog round up for this week. Be sure to stop by next week and see what boomer bloggers are writing about.
