Recall of the Week: Hyundai Sonatas due to brake light problem
November 22, 2015
Hyundai Motor America is recalling nearly 305,000 model 2011-2012 Sonata vehicles.
The brake pedal stopper pad can deteriorate allowing the brake light switch plunger to be extended when the brake pedal is released.
If the brake light switch plunger doesn’t retract as it should, the brake lights may stay on preventing following vehicles from knowing that the vehicle is slowing or stopping.
In addition, if the brake switch plunger isn’t retracted, the transmission can be shifted out of PARK without depressing the brake pedal.
Either condition increases the risk of a crash.
Hyundai said it will notify owners, and dealers will replace the brake pedal stopper pad at no cost. The recall is expected to begin on Jan. 11, 2016.
Owners can contact Hyundai customer service at 855-671-3059. Hyundai's number for this recall is 136.
Owners can also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236, or go to www.safercar.gov.
