Memorial Day is one of the best holidays for finding great deals. But, it’s probably not the time to get the best buys on summer items.

Here are tips from for what to look for at the Memorial Day sales.

Save up to 80 percent on clothing

While May isn't necessarily a great time to shop for summer clothing, it's not a bad time for clothing in general. Last year saw deeply discounted shoes, with some selling for 75 percent off.

You may find designer labels, discounted anywhere from 20 percent to 60 percent off.

Be sure to look for coupons. You may find sales include stackable coupons that could take 15 percent to 35 percent off, depending on the retailer.

Try to find other coupons

Look for coupons for items other than clothing. It's not surprising to see deals for travel, home items, baby items, auto parts, furniture, and musical instruments.

In addition, see if you can find 15 percent to 20 percent off on travel sites.

Check out home goods for sales up to 80 percent off

Memorial Day is an excellent time to stock up on home goods. Last year, about 23 percent of sales covered home and garden categories, including furniture, patio items, and decor.

Expect patio furniture and grills to be discounted. However, Memorial Day isn’t the best time to buy a grill.

You also could find discounts on appliances, lighting, and kitchen items.

Get a better night's sleep for less

If you need a new mattress, the long Memorial Day weekend is a great time to shop. You could find 50 percent off with an extra 15 percent off for a coupon code. Last year, twin-size memory foam mattresses were being sold for as little as $70.

Save beyond the long weekend

Many sales will end on Memorial Day or the day after. But some retailers will extend the sales for at least a few days after the holiday has ended. Keep an eye out through June 3 for Memorial Day sales – but some could continue through mid-June or even longer.
