What to buy at Labor Day sales

When Labor Day comes, many of us think about the end of summer. This year of the pandemic is so different.

Labor Day holiday Sales 2020-1571354_1280Rather than having a big barbecue, we’ll probably have a gathering with our small social group. And, as for shopping, it’s likely that we’ll be looking for bargains online rather than going to stores.

Dealnews.com offers these tips on what to expect from Labor Day sales in 2020, including when they'll start, what items will be discounted, and the kinds of deals you'll see.

The sales

Labor Day is on Sept. 7 this year, but sales will begin way before the holiday weekend. Look for sales now.

Some Labor Day sales will continue after the holiday, so you’ll have time to get bargains. However, many of those sales will be done by the day after Labor Day, so don't wait until the last minute to shop.

Clothing

Ordinarily, Labor Day is a great time to stock up on clothing at discounted prices. Expect discounts to be from 25 percent to 75 percent off.

However, due to the pandemic, some stores may be holding onto inventory from this year rather than discounting these items around the holidays. They’ll try to sell the clothing next summer, instead.

Mattresses

Labor Day is known for its mattress sales. Last year, Big Lots, JCPenney, and Sam’s Club offered great deals. You may find sales that offer up to 50 percent, or 60 percent off.

Grills

Look at home improvement stores for offers on a wide range of grills. If you don’t see one you like, watch for further grill deals in October.

Appliances

Save up to 40 percent on large appliances at Labor Day sales.

Travel

Labor Day doesn't usually have a lot of travel sales, but there are some this year. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the travel industry has been upended, and while it's slowly trying to find a new normal, it's not quite there yet. However, there will a few offers that are similar to last year's.

If you're shopping for a travel bargain, be sure to find about local laws and regulations in both your area and at your destination. For example, it's good to know about travel restrictions in case you'll have to quarantine for two weeks when you return.
