What to buy and not buy in March

St Patricks Day Couple in Wagon

You usually won’t find many sales for St. Patrick’s Day, but since March has few sales, you may find some retailers offering a bargain for the holiday.

Here are some suggestions from DealNews:

What to buy

Luggage

If you’re in need of a luggage upgrade, March is a good time to shop. Look for bargains at Target, Macy’s, Kohl’s, and other stores.

Check REI for sales on backpacks.

Winter sports gear

If you enjoy skiing or snowboarding, look for deals this month on sports gear. The season is coming to a close, so retailers often try to clear out winter items before the warm-weather activities begin.

Cruises – maybe

Some online travel agencies are offering future savings – you can book now and save on a trip you’ll take much later. However, make sure the cancelation terms are favorable for you, if you think you’ll feel safe to take a cruise even much later.

Seasonal fruits and vegetables

In March, look for bargains on these vegetables: artichokes, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, leeks, lettuce, mushrooms, parsnips, radishes, rutabagas, and turnips. For fruit, look for pineapples on sale.

What not to buy in March

Android phones

Compare prices in July or November. Watch for deals around Prime Day and Black Friday.

Spring apparel

Look for sales at the end of the season. Check the clearance racks as spring ends.

Lingerie

Check for sales June. Victoria’s Secret usually has its semi-annual sale then.

Good advice. I think we all need to book our travel plans -- cruises etc. -- sooner rather than later before the post-Covid rush.

Rita

I'm not sure if I'll ever feel comfortable going on another cruise. The stories about people being trapped on cruise ships when things were being locked down sounded terrible.

Jennifer

Mother's Day is also a great time of year to look for deals on cell phones. All companies do a huge push at that time of year. What I'm finding interesting is that lately, people are spending a lot of money buying furniture. And I can't figure out why. It doesn't seem like sales are going on so I'm wondering if it's a pandemic phenomenon?

Rita

Yes, it's a good idea to compare prices for cell phones around Mother's Day. You might find a sale.

Furniture sales are up, as is remodeling, during the pandemic.

Meryl

Feeling ambivalent about cruises. A great way to travel and see places without packing and unpacking all the time, but covid dampened my desire. Instead of buying more stuff now, I am intent on spring cleaning and getting rid of stuff before buying more. I only had a year to do this...

Rita

Meryl, getting rid of stuff before buying more is a good idea. Shopping certainly has increased since we've been home for the pandemic.

I like TJ Max and Nordstrom Rack. TJ Max often has great purses and sometimes luggage. Nordstrom Rack is my go-to for clothes and sometimes Macy's.

Rita

I love the Nordstrom Rack. I wish there was one closer to where I live. When I lived in Seattle for a year, I shopped there all the time. I've only shopped at TJ Max a few times, but the prices were very good. I'm not shopping much these days, except online. I even order my groceries for pickup.

Carol Cassara

I do need new luggage. Thank you for flagging me! Why March, I wonder.

Rita

Probably March because the summer is usually a big travel season and sales would draw people in who are getting ready for vacations.
