Happy Fourth of July

Eagle-Superimposed on an American Flag g772736a62_640Well, we still have a lot of freedoms in America, even though the Right is making victories in taking them away.

Eighty-four percent of Americans plan to celebrate the 4th of July this year, according to a survey prepared for the National Retail Federation.

For activities, 59 percent plan to have a cookout, barbecue, or picnic; 37 percent will attend a fireworks or community celebration, and 13 percent will go to a parade. For traveling, 10 percent have plans.

On spending, the average expected spending for food for July Fourth is $83.12, with total spending for Independence Day estimated to be $7.7 billion.

Remember, if you’re setting off fireworks, please follow safety recommendations. A teen in Washington lost his left hand and injured his right already this July Fourth holiday.

And, wear a mask for indoor gatherings. Covid-19 is high in some counties, like mine, but people aren’t following directions from health officials to wear masks again and social distance. People, especially older adults and those with underlying medical conditions, still need protection.

Whatever your plans, I hope you have a great Fourth of July celebration. If you have to work, thanks for helping people out on this holiday.

We spent July 4th driving from Lansing, MI, to Donegal, PA. Not exactly the most exciting day. But I would definitely vote in favor of taking away the right to speed on our nation's highways. Saw one accident, not on the highway, and fortunately only a minor injury. Be safe everyone.

Yes, I remember the time when the speed on freeways was reduced to 60 on most freeways in Washington state. The death rate went down. Yes, be safe.
