What to buy and not buy in February

Since many people emptied out their pocketbooks for holiday spending, by the time February rolls around, they’re probably still paying off their credit cards. However, there are big opportunities to shop and save in February.

Here are some suggestions from DealNews.com on what bargains to look for in February:

TVs

Although Black Friday in November is the best time  usually to buy a new TV, compare prices to see if you can find a decent offer before the Super Bowl.

Winter clothing

Many retailers are starting to clear their racks during February to make room for spring selections. You’re likely to find decent discount on winter clothing, some of which should be part of Presidents’ Day sales.

I finally found a new red wool winter coat, $300 from London Fog marked down to $124. I ordered it, so I hope it fits.

Cruises

With some types of travel expected to be more affordable in 2024, compare prices to see what cruise companies are offering.

Fitness equipment

Because some customers are returning fitness equipment they purchased in February that didn’t catch on, retailers could have fitness items in February that they’d like to get rid of. Watch for open-box and new fitness equipment to be on sale in February.

Valentine’s Day sales

Keep your eye out for deals on gift items that are popular around Valentine’s Day such as flowers, candy, and dining out.

Valentine’s clearance items

As usual, you’ll find big savings on February 15 – teddy bears, chocolates, and more. However, don’t wait too long to shop. The selection will likely dwindle quickly.

Presidents’ Day sales

Presidents’ Day is the third Monday in February, and it might be the biggest shopping opportunity of the new year, as many stores participate in promotions and a decent amount of items go on sale. Compare prices and look for deals on furniture, mattresses, major appliances, and electronics.

Furniture

You’re likely to see discounts on furniture for living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, and other spaces. Patio furniture may be discounted, but larger savings will be likely in the fall.

Mattresses

It’s worth comparing prices because you may find discounts as high as $1,000 off depending on what size of bed you’re looking for.

Major appliances

Home Depot, Lowe’s, and Best Buy have offered worthwhile deals in past years, so do research if you’d like a new washer or dryer, stove, or refrigerator. I love the new stove, pictured above, that I bought at the Black Friday sales in November.

What not to buy in February

For luggage, wait until March. If you’re interested in spring clothing, April and May are better discount months. For Android phones, more savings are likely in July or November.

Happy shopping. Comparing prices and shopping is a lot of work, but when you finally find just the right item at a good price, it’s great.
