What to do on Presidents’ Day

President Washington and LincolnHow’s your Presidents’ Day going?

I got lucky and my daughter is visiting from Madrid. We’ve been checking out the sights in Seattle and getting together with her friends.

If you need some ideas for activities for the holiday, consider the following:

  • Read biographies of Washington and Lincoln.
  • Ask five friends who their favorite president is and why.
  • Find out when the next election is being held in your state and make sure you read up and are informed on the candidates and issues. Determine what resources are available to help you get information such as VOTE411.
  • Go to the website for your city or county and find out when the next meeting or the council or commission is. Plan to attend. Make a list of five issues that you see on the website that need your input. Find out how to contact your local government about them.
  • Find out what your state legislature is working on and send emails to legislators on these issues.
  • Point out incorrect information on social media about governmental issues.
  • Join an organization such as the League of Women Voters that studies government and takes action on issues.
  • Support media organizations that present factual news.

In addition to being a day to remember our presidents, Presidents’ Day has become a holiday for shopping. It’s one of the time of the year for big sales.

If you’re going shopping, be sure to compare prices. Mattresses, major appliances, and winter clothing are among some of the deals to be found at Presidents’ Day sales.

For more tips, see “What to Buy and Not Buy in February.”

If you’re working today, I hope you can get a day off soon.

Happy Presidents’ Day.
