More than 200,000 Frigidaire and Kenmore ranges are being recalled, again, due fire and burn risks
May 18, 2024
Kitchen ranges that were manufactured between 2001 and 2009 continue to pose an injury risk to consumers, so they’re being recalled again.
The Electrolux Group is recalling about 203,000 smooth top ranges, which were previously recalled in August 2009.
Depending on the model, the surface heating elements: can turn on without being switched on; fail to turn off after being switched off; or heat to different temperatures than selected, the company and U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said in a statement. These defects can cause fires and burns.
Since the recall was first announced in 2009, Electrolux said it has received at least 212 reports of the ranges malfunctioning, including 14 reports of fires and eight reports of injuries involving burns to hands or arms, as well as smoke inhalation.
Sold in white, bisque, black, and stainless steel, the recall ranges include Frigidaire, Frigidaire Gallery, Frigidaire Professional, and Kenmore Elite smooth-top electric ranges.
With Frigidaire models, the recalled units have a serial number range of VF122xxxxx - VF936xxxxx. For Kenmore Elite models, the recalled units have a serial number range of VF122xxxxx - VF334xxxxx.
The recalled ranges were sold at Sears and independent appliance stores nationwide from June 2001 through August 2009. The price was between $1,000 and $2,500.
Contact Electrolux or register online to take part in the recall. Based on the serial number, it will be determined whether or not the range can be repaired.
If the range isn’t repairable, consumers should stop using it immediately and discard it.
For ranges that aren’t repairable, consumers will receive a $50 electronic gift card as a refund and reimbursement of up to $60 for a haul-away fee, after they’ve submitted proof of purchase of a new range and the haul-away fee paid.
