A trip down memory lane: Remembering my ancestors
September 07, 2024
My niece asked me to send some photos of our ancestors from 1910 and 1920 to share with her book club. Of course, I said, and the memories began to flow.
How are you doing organizing your family historical photos? Do you have them in notebooks? Are they scanned?
I talked to a couple who organize estate sales. They told me it's heartbreaking to do an estate sale and see that the family has thrown away the family photos. Some family members said they didn't know who the people were, so they just put the photos in the garbage. Don't let that happen in your family.
Here are some of the most famous photos of my family from the era my niece was interested in:
From left, Peter Slingsby, my grandfather, Frances Backhouse Slingsby, my great grandmother, Olive Slingsby, my aunt – 1908.
Peter Slingsby: My grandfather – 1914.
Left, Ruth Telecky Slingsby, my mom, with her cousin Pauline Hudec Kakac, being held by their grandfather Hudec – 1915.
Right, Ruth Telecky Slingsby, my mom, with her siblings, from left, Richard Telecky, Irene Telecky, Mable Telecky – 1925.
Front center, Laura Baylee Slingsby, my grandmother. From left Lois Mae Taylor, Mable Taylor, Minor Slingsby, my dad, Jessie Slingsby MacKibben, Harry Slingsby – 1926.
Charles and Lillian Telecky, my grandparents -- 1930.
Charles and Lillian Telecky, my grandparents, with my sister Marlene Slingsby, left, and cousin Jean Ann Burrill – 1941.
So, get to work on those family photos. This review for my niece reminded me I have a lot of work to do. I have many photos scanned, but half of them need to be identified or dated. In addition, I'm putting the historical family photos in albums with archival sleeves to be passed down to my family when I die. My daughter Mona will get the photos.
