Shoppers will spend more than $27.5 billion on Valentine’s Day this year. That makes Valentine’s Day the third-priciest holiday on the calendar for U.S. consumers.
More than 30 percent of people expect their Valentine to spend at least $50 on a gift, according to WalletHub’s 2025 Valentine’s Day Survey.
Whether you like this holiday or not, there’s no denying St. Valentine’s impact on our wallets.
Economically, times are hard for almost everyone. Keeping to a budget on Valentine’s Day isn’t easy, but it can be done, said Dallen Timothy, professor at Arizona State University’s School of Community Resources and Development.
“We tend to want to demonstrate our affection by spending a lot of money on gifts and activities around Valentine’s Day,” said Timothy. “Many retailers have special deals and discounts around Valentine’s Day, and if someone is willing to shop around, they can find good deals on a wide range of gifts and activities.”
Remember, too, that the recipient doesn’t necessarily need to know the gift was bought at a discount, he said.
